Help Natural Balance Raise $1 Million to Support Guide Dog Organizations

There are a couple of things that Natural Balance and I have in common.  One thing is we are both in the Sept/Oct issue of FIDO Friendly magazine.  While I don’t grace the cover, Nicollette Sheridan does and she is talking about teaming up with my preferred brand of dog food, Natural Balance, in support of National Guide Dog Month.  To add a small plug, my Going Green with Fido article is in this issue and I am proud of this accomplishment.  You can read it by visiting Fido Friendly clicking HERE.

Friday’s Focus: PetFinder.com Foundation

Where is the first place online you go when looking for an adoptable pet?  That’s right…PetFinder.com, but did you know that there is a PetFinder.com Foundation?  I will shamefully admit that I didn’t know, so I went to PetFinder.com and there it was, a button at the top for the PetFinder.com Foundation.  They are my Friday’s Focus this week, so without further ado….

What is the mission of the Petfinder.com Foundation?

The Petfinder.com Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) public charity whose mission is to ensure that no pet is euthanized for lack of a home.

Web Address: www.petfinderfoundation.com

Can you give us a little history on the Petfinder.com Foundation? The Petfinder.com Foundation was founded in 2003 as the charitable arm of Petfinder.com. Petfinder.com is the virtual home of homeless pets from over 13,000+ shelters and rescue groups across North America. Every year since 2003, the Petfinder.com Foundation has been providing grants and support services to Petfinder.com member shelters and rescue groups to help ensure that no adoptable pet is euthanized for lack of a home. In 2004, the Petfinder.com Foundation gave $43,452.35 worth of grants to Petfinder.com members. In 2009, the Foundation awarded or fulfilled $1,800,000 in cash and product grants to our members.

I see you have some partners in saving pets.  Can you tell me more about your partnerships? Merial supports our emergency management and disaster relief efforts.  Since 2005, Merial has donated more than $3 million to the Petfinder.com Foundation and the American Veterinary Medical Foundation through the Paws to Save Pets program. http://us.merial.com/pawstosavepets/

The Animal Rescue Site funds food for shelter and sanctuary animals by donating a portion of all sales of pet supplies, clothes, gifts, home and garden items and other products sold through their online store. The site is part of the family of GreaterGood Network Stores dedicated to funding important charities and causes. Shop at The Animal Rescue Site

A coalition of animal protection groups has been created to aid animals affected by the devastating January 12th earthquake in Haiti. The Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH) is jointly led by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) in partnership with over a dozen of the world’s leading animal protection organizations, including the Petfinder.com Foundation.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare and the Petfinder.com Foundation formed a relationship in 2006 in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita resulting the IFAW/Petfinder.com Foundation Animal Rescue trailer. The Animal rescue trailer has been in integral part in IFAW’s ability to effectively respond to disasters in the United States and care for affected animals.

Can you tell us about the Hide, Perch, and Go Boxes and how we can help with that campaign?

Shelter life can be scary for cats. The transition from an original home to shelter life to an adoptive home brings many changes in sights, smells and surroundings, leaving cats fearful in each situation.

The Hide, Perch & Go Box when used at a shelter gives a cat control over her environment, allowing her to relax and become more adoptable. The box then follows the cat to her new home, giving her a familiar environment during the adjustment period.

In 2009, in partnership with the PETCO Foundation and The Animal Rescue Site, the Petfinder.com Foundation distributed more than 80,000 Hide, Perch & Go Boxes and secured the lowest possible pricing for Petfinder.com member shelters. In 2010, we are busy providing $300,000 worth of Hide, Perch and Go boxes to our members.

At just $3.50 per box, a donation of $35 will supply a needy shelter with 10 Hide, Perch & Go Boxes, significantly improving the quality of life for and adoptability of a shelter cat.

The Petfinder.com Foundation offers disaster grants.  How have you been able to help shelters affected by the Gulf Oil Spill?

Petfinder.com Foundation will be providing $100,000 in operating budget grants to shelters located within 30 miles of the coast. Animal shelters have been affected by the economic impact the oil spill has had on the region. Their supportive community, including businesses, are unable to provide enough help with donations to cover general operation costs.

The second type of grant will provide $50,000 in total to the foster based rescue groups who are willing to take animals from these shelters impacted by the oil spill. Each $1,000 grant will provide financial help to these groups who can transport and take some of the homeless animals to decrease the burden on these shelters and help increase adoptions.

What other information would you like my readers to know about the Foundation?

Less than 10% of donations to the Petfinder.com Foundation is spent on administration costs.

**********************************************************************************

There you go!  So many wonderful things they do and you can help their mission by donating.  It doesn’t matter if you are a cat person or dog person.  We all care about pets and we are all in this together.  Please consider making a donation to the PetFinder.com Foundation today.

I’d like to thank Jane at PetFinder.com and Vicki from the PetFinder.com Foundation for supplying us with this information for our Fridays’ Focus.

Q & A with Jim Gorant, Author of The Lost Dogs, Michael Vick’s Dogs and their Tail of Rescue and Redemption

Forget what you think you know about pit bulls. Contrary to popular belief they are some of the most loyal, playful and loving dogs around. Michael Vick’s former fighting dogs are on a mission to show the world that this very misunderstood breed is not full of menacing, cruel dogs. In fact, they are some of the best household pets in America. Jonny Justice, who was featured on the cover of last Sunday’s Parade, is just one example of how well the former Vick dogs are doing in their new homes. Many have gone on to be certified therapy workers and adored family members proving that pit bulls, just like any other dog, want to be man’s best friend.

THE LOST DOGS: Michael Vicks Dogs and Their Tale of Rescue and Redemption (Gotham Books: September, 16 2010; $26.00) by Jim Gorant brings readers the full, behind-the-scenes story of the heroic effort to first save and then rehabilitate the 51 pit bulls confiscated from Michael Vick’s Bad News Kennels. Gorant presents the entire account, from the frustrations of the investigation to the individual rehabilitation of the dogs themselves.

Have you had moments over the past few years where you’ve wondered what happened to the Pit Bulls that were part of Michael Vick’s Bad Newz Kennel?  I’ve seen a story or two, even a 2-hour Dog Town episode on the National Geographic Channel that touched briefly on them, but now comes Jim Gorant’s book, The Lost Dogs, which covers the investigation, the tremendous effort to save their lives, rehabilitate them, and to find their new places in a society filled with fear of the breed.  This heart-wrenching and emotionally charged look at their lives from the very beginning is a must-read.  It’s filled with inspiring stories that prove Pit Bulls are lovable, caring, and very misunderstood creatures.  It’s heart-breaking at times, but in the end I came away wanting to do more to educate the public on the cruel and violent underworld of dog fighting, the often misunderstood breed, and what we as a society can do to get laws passed for tougher penalties against those caught dog fighting.

I’m thrilled that I had an opportunity to pose some questions to Jim regarding his upcoming book, The Lost Dogs:

How did you feel about the Pit Bull breed prior to this book?

I didn’t know much beyond what one reads in the headlines, which is of course the worst stuff. I’d passed a few in the street, but never met one face to face and certainly never spent time playing with one and having it climb up and lick my face.

Was there one “aha moment” that changed your mind about the breed?

I don’t think so. It was a series of moments, a gradual education about the dog beyond the myth. I’m an open-minded person, but I’ve also developed a necessary skepticism about many things, so I approach with caution but I can be swayed by a strong argument that’s based on facts. As I heard the argument in favor of the breed and learned more about them I came to my own conclusion.

Where were you when you decided you had to know about the fate of the dogs and more importantly, to write about them?

I was in my office when I first read about the Vick dogs, and my curiosity was immediately piqued, but it was a slow process. Initially I didn’t think it was a good story for Sports Illustrated, where I work, so I pushed it out of my mind. But somehow, I kept returning to it. The more I read, the more I wanted to know. Finally, I made a few calls and decided, “why not”, and pitched the idea to my bosses. They told me to go for it.

Did you at any time feel sorry for Michael Vick?

Short and sweet: No, I never felt sorry for him. At the same time, I would say that I think he’s a product of an environment that has a different value system and that he did lose more than many people realize. That’s not to make excuses for him. By the time he was caught, he’d emerged into a world where this was clearly not acceptable behavior and he had the option to do the right thing at any time. Not only did he not do that, but he actively pursued the opposite path. He got caught, pled guilty and was given a sentence, which he fulfilled. Based on what I’ve learned about the case—and a lot of this is detailed in The Lost Dogs—the prosecution did an excellent job, and the sentence actually exceeded what was recommended by federal guidelines.

You decided to not interview Vick for this book.  Can you tell me more about this decision?

It didn’t start out as a choice. I knew that some of my colleagues at Sports Illustrated were pursuing an interview with him and that he was unequivocally unavailable. Moreover, I felt like the book was not really about him; it was about the dogs. Shortly after I turned in the initial manuscript he began giving interviews in support of his reality show on BET, and I probably could have gotten time with him, but I still felt like it would’ve pulled focus away from the thing I truly wanted the book to be about. I may have felt differently if I hadn’t been able to get close to the Bad Newz operation in other ways, but I was, so I decided that interviewing Michael would have been more of a distraction at that point.

Was there one dog that stood out for you more than the others, in terms of how far they’ve come after this horrible experience?

None stood out. There are so many amazing stories that it’s hard to rank them. I will say though, that Sweet Jasmine moved me the most, which is why, she’s one of the main characters in The Lost Dogs.

Was there any part of the book that will surprise the reader?

The book is full of surprises. It was such a sprawling undertaking with dozens of dogs and people and investigators spread out in so many different places that a lot of what the book does is assemble everything that was happening in little pockets and outposts all over the country into one continuous narrative. Some of the rescuers that were involved in the case from the start have read early copies and they’ve all come back with comments about parts of the story that they had totally missed while they were living through it.  Beyond that, I think the surprises will vary depending the reader. For those who don’t know much about pit bulls, I think it will be a real eye opener. For those who didn’t follow the evolution of the case and what became of the dogs, I think the details about how close the whole thing came to imploding and how much effort and passion went into the rescue will be headturning.

Do you think the Pit Bulls that were euthanized could have been rehabilitated?

Only two dogs were euthanized. One was injured and suffering physically. The other, from what I’m told, had simply snapped mentally and was beyond help. There were a handful of dogs that were spared which probably would not have been in a different situation. Not that they weren’t worthy or redeemable, but the amount of effort needed to bring them around might not have been justifiable if not for the high-profile nature of the case, and, to be perfectly honest, the funds available from Vick’s restitution. The safety of the dogs and the general public were the first priority, but beyond, the Vick dogs represented the opportunity to make a few points about pit bulls, fight-bust dogs and rehabilitation, and those opportunities were not missed.

What would you like people to come away with after reading The Lost Dogs?

I came to this as a writer and journalist, so I hope that readers are engaged, entertained and informed and that the story, both through the way it’s told and its content, reaches them on some emotional level. Any impact on attitudes and opinions beyond that is great, but it can’t be the goal or you won’t have something worth reading.

I’m still crushed that I can’t go to BlogPaws West.  I really do want to go.  I feel like I learned so much at the last one.  I’m hoping by some miracle that a sponsor will appear for me.  I keep rubbing the genie lamp.

I know some of my loyal readers that post often and enter sweepstakes but I want to know who you are, so we can be friends.  I know we all have some things in common and I would love more dialog with you.  I know you are all pet people, a majority of you are anyway.  How many pets do you have?  Do you have cats and dogs?  What are their names and what is their story?  Where are you from?  I know I can get neat little widgets that I can put on my blog that tells me where you are visiting from but I have enough stuff cramming my sidebars. :o )  What do you guys do?  Stay at home moms?  Work full-time?  Kids?  I don’t want to pry too much but I do see some of you here quite a bit and it would be nice to know a little bit more about you.  Just saying. :giggles:

Kiko and I visited the Southside Shelter again this past Sunday.  We are working with a company called One Dog One Bone.  They make super cute dog pools and we got 4 of them: 2 Bone pools and 2 Paw pools.  We are delivering them to a couple of local shelters.  I don’t want to say too much yet, because I will be posting a review soon, but I did want to tell you that Kiko and I had a blast.  Rodeo, who is waiting for his forever home, was hilarious and couldn’t stop splashing around in the pool.

Speaking of Rodeo, he is my #TweetAPetTues for Petfinder.com.  You may have seen my post last week about what that is.  You can read about it here.  Basically, every Tuesday you find an adoptable pet on Petfinder.com and Tweet about the pet, in hopes that someone, somewhere, will see that adorable little face and want to take him/her home.

The Obsession: Coconut!  Our good friend Carol over at Bloomingtails Dog Boutique introduced the girls to Coco Therapy.  To be continued…..

We have 25 companies signed up for our Holiday Gift Guide already!  Human and Pet Products!  Exciting stuff!  I know!  I know! It’s only September.  August to be exact!  Hey, I need to plan.  I’m a planner.  Planning is what I do best.  I was thinking I would run it from November 22 to December 23.  However, I think I may need to start earlier, to make sure people have time to place orders, if they choose to do so, with the companies I am highlighting.  Thoughts?

I’m officially 28 days away from turning 42. :sighs:  I feel like I have to body of a 90 year old.  No joke.  Between the Degenerative Disc Disease, Arthritis and Oesteopenia in my hips…yeah.  No fun.

Did you know that I love dogs?  So, when a few companies on Twitter tried to get me to hook up with them and be their friend this week and last, I posted, “@NameofCoHere Thank you for the follow but I in no way, shape, or form support breeding.  Don’t Shop! Adopt! Really?  Do some of these companies actually think I want anything to do with them when they are promoting breeding?  No thanks.  Pass.  Clearly they didn’t take the time to read my blog.  It didn’t take long for the “unfollow” to happen!  LOL!  Sorry, I speak my mind and speak for animals.  Who is the latest?  I thought you’d never ask:  http://twitter.com/dogbreeders

Make Rabies History – Veterinarians without Borders

Originally posted by my friends at Be the Change for animals.

Rabies plagues animals in parts of the world where prevention is not prevalent. Countless animals and 55,000 people – mostly children in Africa and Asia – die  annually from a disease we know how to prevent.

Veterinarians without Borders / Vétérinaires sans Frontières – Canada (VWB/VSF)  provides rabies prevention and community education programs around the world. This September, VWB/VSF asks that we participate in Rabies Campaign 2010 and recognize World Rabies Day on September 28th. Make rabies history!

ACT NOW

When asked what her goal was for this campaign, Sheila Taylor of VWB said, “We would like to get 10,000 followers!” Right now they have 159. Let’s band together and give VWB a good head start!

WHY IT MATTERS

With effective programming, community education and community involvement, the global rabies problem is solvable. To date, VWB/VSF has raised and dispersed over $100,000 towards rabies prevention projects around the world, including projects in Chile, Guatemala, Northern Canada, India, Nepal, Malawi and Cambodia.

See VWB/VSF rabies prevention in action…

In Todos Santos, a remote village in the Cuchamatán Mountains of Guatemala, VWB/VSF-Canada is working with local partners to develop a sustainable and culturally-appropriate canine population control and rabies prevention program. Dogs are the primary reservoir of rabies in the community, and many live in daily fear of these free-roaming animals. Previous population control programs, like mass dog extermination campaigns, have proved unsuccessful and community members are eager to develop more humane and sustainable solutions. With the active participation of local residents, VWB/VSF and its partners are currently implementing a long-term program to improve the health and wellbeing of both people and dogs living in this community.

Urgent Letters Needed-Indiana

On August 6, 2010, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officers raided a suspected dog fighting operation.

When police arrived at the home to serve the search warrant, a dog fight was underway. They arrested 23 people, recovered several dogs, drugs, weapons and cash.

You can view the News Video by clicking HERE.

Now, 21 of the defendants are out on bond and are expected back in court on September 7, for a pre-trial hearing.

The charges in these cases parallel those from other major animal fighting busts across the county. Animal fighters don’t just abuse animals; they also participate in numerous other illegal activities such as gambling and possession and/or sale of illegal drugs and firearms.

There has been a loud public outcry over what can be done to stop animal fighting in our state. We are responding to that call.

This past Saturday, Casa Del Toro was joined with Indy Pit Crew and a number of caring individuals, and wrote letters to the court that will provide a voice for the animals.

Your letters as concerned citizens against animal fighting can and will make a difference.

If you can  would like to donate towards  our Anti animal fighting efforts you can donate via paypal at www.casadeltoro.org for the following supplies:

Letters  have all the charging information already in place.

Each letter can be found by scrolling down, they will be one after another, each one will need to have your contact information copy & pasted to each one.

Do not forget to sign them.

Sample letters can be mailed “as is” or a personal message an also be typed in as well.

This is a 52 page document with charging information of all defendants.

To avoid several stamps, you can send them all at once in a manila envelope with a paperclip that separates each defendant’s letter so they can be placed in each defendants file.

Please let us know  when you have mailed the letters or if you need any additional assistance.

Bloomingtails Dog Boutique- Review:Nina Ottosson’s Dog Tornado Giveaway: Aunt’s Lucy’s Organic Pumpkin Dog Treats

We’re not in Kansas anymore, Kiko!  We’ve discovered this PAWsome game from Nina Ottosson, the Dog Tornado, thanks to our friend Carol at Bloomingtails Dog Boutique.  Kiko and Riley have been taking turns playing with it.  Dog Tornado is just one of many Nina Ottosson interactive dog toys and it’s clearly a hit in our house.  It should be in yours, too.  It’s a great way to enrich their minds and is a great challenge for them to figure out how to get the treats out.

There are different levels to the Dog Tornado.  There are four layers of rotating discs.  Three layers have compartments where you can place a treat.  To give them some variety I added different kinds of treats.  However, the yummiest treats were Grandma Lucy’s Organic Pumpkin Treats.  I’ll tell you more about those in a moment.

From Nina Ottosson:

Suggestion… By placing the white plastic blocks in some of the compartments, the degree of difficulty increases. You can tie a string through the holes in the blocks to make it easier for the dog to lift the blocks away. Should your dog have an injured paw for example, you can place the game on a stool to make the dog work with its nose only.

The idea… is for you and your dog/cat to have a pleasant and rewarding time together. Enhances your relationship with your dog. You show. The dog/cat looks, listens and learns. Praise it when it does things right. Together you will have fun!

Tips…

Mix some meaty dog food with water, pour some of the mixture in the compartments, put the game in the freezer and let it set. This is perfect for hot days or when the dog needs some extra activity. Note: only under strict supervision.

Important… Do not let the dog/cat chew or bite the toy, only play with it together with your dog/cat, do not leave the dog/cat unattended, the dog/cat must not play with or chew the blocks. Put away when the game is over. Designed for animals, it is not a toy for a child.

Suits dogs and cats of all ages and sizes.

This is Kiko playing with Nina Ottoson’s Dog Tornado at an easy level.  I didn’t use the white plastic blocks/bones with her.  I wanted to make it easy at first, so we can work our way up to make it a little more challenging.

Riley got a real kick out of the Dog Tornado.  Riley doesn’t usually get excited about toys and games but she certainly took a liking to the Dog Tornado.  To show you another example of how you can increase the challenge for your dog, I added the block/bones to the game for Riley.

As you can see, this is a great learning game for dogs and a must-have! We’ve been using it for a week now and they are not bored with it at all. So, one of the treats I used in the Dog Tornado compartments were Grandma Lucy’s Organic Pumpkin Treats.

From Bloomingtails Dog Boutique:

Grandma Lucy’s Organic Dog Treats are not made in a factory but baked in a bakery by people who love their pets.  Since 1999, Grandma Lucy’s has taken great pride in making wholesome, natural and delicious pet treats.

All of the ingredients in the Organic Dog Treats are USDA Approved.

Your dog will love the great taste of the Organic Oven Baked Dog Treats, but what you will love the most is the fact that they are made with organic, human-quality ingredients for dogs.  The treats are so tasty, your dog will beg for more.

Don’t tell them, but pumpkin is great for dogs!  Pumpkin  is an excellent source of Vitamin A, potassium, and fiber. The nutrients found in pumpkin help to keep a dog’s immune system strong, thereby strengthening resistance to cancer and other disease.

Ingredients: Organic Wheat Flour, Organic Dehydrated Cane Juice, Organic Soybean and/or Organic Sunflower and/or Organic Canola Oil, Organic Egg Powder, Organic Pumpkin, Organic Mace, Organic Cinnamon.

I’ll freely admit that the Organic Pumpkin Treats smelled so good that I tried them, too. Why not? They are made with human-quality ingredients, right? I have to say…these treats are delicious. I think the girls are going to have to share them with me. :giggles: That’s no joke, folks! They really are tasty. The girls really seem to enjoy them, and really enjoyed finding them hidden in the Dog Tornado with the other treats.

Please do not overfeed your dogs.  Treats should also not be a substitute for feeding.

Several weeks ago I posted about a runner we got from CSNStores.com.  The have a wide selection of  modern rugs available.  Here is the link to the review. We have a hallway that has original wood floors and the girls run back and forth, chasing balls and toys.  Their nails wreak havoc on the floors, so we decided to get the runner to help.  Well, we are thinking about getting the rug to match.  Our dining room is connected to the hallway and I think it would look much better if we had the matching rug.  As you know, CSNStores.com has all your home makeover needs.  LOVE them.

I am so completely and utterly sad to say that I was not chosen to be sponsored at BlogPaws West.  I know, I know.  How could they not pick us?  Well, I have cried over it and I am really heartbroken because I think this would have been a super opportunity for me and Doggies and Stuff.  So, I hang my head low, tail between my legs, and walk away with pride.  I may have had an opportunity to attend via a pet food company but for a number of reasons, I cannot support this pet food company, and I want to keep my dignity.  I won’t mention the name here.  Perhaps I’ll get lucky next year.  I look forward to hearing the reports from the conference.  I have a number of ani pal friends going, so I’m sure it will be a blast.

I was featured in an Associated Press story last week.  I’m a little sad that my local news didn’t pick it up but it did get on MSNBC online, ABC News online, and Chicago Tribune online.  YAY me!  It was actually sad and I had a hard time telling the story.  I got choked up a few times.  However, the writer was fantastic and I think she did a great job of covering different view points for handling the death of a pet.  Bravo, Sue!  Well written.

I have a Halloween Costume Contest and Giveaway for my readers coming up.  Oh yes!  LOVE Halloween.  It’s my favorite time of the year.  So, check this out.  First, can you complete this survey for my friend John over at GWLittle.comhttp://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CVJSDZR He would be so grateful.  Secondly, can you send me your pet Halloween photos from last year?  This is what we will use for the contest.  We will be having a giveaway, so you will have a shot of winning a costume.  Not just from GWLittle, because that is mostly for little dogs, but from another company, too.  We need to make sure we include the big dogs, so nobody gets left out.  So, please send your photos to DoggiesAndStuff@gmail.com, along with your name, your pet’s name, and a small caption.  I’m looking forward to this!!

By the way, I’m gearing up for my Holiday Gift Guide.  I have 25 companies participating so far, both pet and human companies!  Doggies and Stuff will be highlighting one to two companies a day from November 22 to December 23.  If your company would like to be included visit here to see how!
