Mexico, MO Puppy Mill Rescue Mission Part 1
Posted in Doggies on 31. Oct, 2010
Update 11/4/2010I’ve received a lot of support from the pet community for our efforts in saving the dogs from the puppy mill auction that took place in Mexico, MO last weekend (October 29-30). However, I’ve also received a couple of emails from people slamming us for putting money in the hands of these mills.
I wanted to take an opportunity to clear this up for people who may not understand or may not have researched what happened last weekend. A few months ago a report on Fox Now News in St. Louis, MO exposed a pet store being linked to a puppy mill farm, which was the Schindler Farm. In August of this year, a follow-up report on Fox Now News in St. Louis, MO showed the pet store closing because their lease was not renewed.
After this expose, the farm announced it was going out of business and that they would be auctioning off all of their dogs. News of this spread quickly throughout the United States, and a huge rescue effort was underway to get as many dogs out as possible. Rescues from all over the country were soon planning their trips to Mexico, MO, as well as creating groups online to unite in an effort to rescue the dogs from this mill.
I would like to make very clear that I DO NOT condone giving money to puppy mills. I DO NOT support going to dog auctions that take place on a weekly basis to purchase dogs from the hands of these horrible puppy mills. The rescue effort that took place last weekend in Mexico, MO was an exception to the rule, a one-time effort, at least for our group. Putting money in the hands of these breeders is wrong. If you purchase these dogs at auctions, it only gives them more money to do their horrible work and the cycle will just continue. The puppy mills will have rescues where they want them and then they win.
Again, I DO NOT support buying dogs at auctions. There were groups from all over the country that planned this carefully and with a goal in mind. I would urge you to not attend any dog auctions because this is what these mills want….your money.
I hope this clears up and misconceptions you may have had about this rescue effort. I should have stated these things earlier on and to be honest, I really wasn’t thinking of that at the time. I’m sorry if this rescue effort upset you, or gave you the wrong idea as to why we were there. I’m open to discussion about this but I hope this gives you a clear understanding of where I stand on this issue.

Kouga dog and I attended the Walk 4 Mutts to help raise funds today for the dogs that were rescued. I appreciate all you did and I’m so glad you got home safe and sound. I hope that these dogs go on to live happy, healthy, long lives. Take Care,
Kelly
Those poor babies …. to have lived their lives that way is heartbreaking…
BUT they will have a silver lining – a soon to be forever home with someone who will love them & give them the home they so deserve.
They are all so adorable- you won’t have a problem getting them somewhere they will be cherished.
WOOF for all you & the other rescuers did!
Great job to all involved. I’m sure it was really difficult and that’s one reason I didn’t go. I was afraid my emotions would get the best of me and I’d end up getting in trouble. The dogs you got look like they’re in really good shape both physically and mentally.
great job doreen and bless your heart for doing this.
What an accomplishment! Thrilled to see so many who will now have a great life, thanks to you!
Thank you to you and everyone who went down to rescue these dogs! Boo, the frenchie you were able to rescue, has been to our Vet and tonight will be going to his foster home. They can’t wait to smother him with love and hugs and kisses! He will be truly spoiled and live the rest of his life being loved the way every dog deserves! We, at Chicago French Bulldog Rescue, thank you again from the bottom of our hearts!
I am part of the Chicago French Bulldog Rescue. Boo is the French Bulldog that had given up hope. I am so very proud to be his foster mom. I cannot thank you enough for getting this Frenchie angel boy out of the conditions in which he was living! Boo has had many angels touch his life since leaving the auction, each one lsying down stepping stones on his path to a new and happy life. Thanks to all of you for giving this boy a second chance. Boo is in heaven on all the comfy beds in our home. He is scared and so unsure of many things. What he is sure of, is that he likes the home cooked meals of which he is allowed to eat his fill and the soft kisses and pets of everyone in our family. My other foster dog Cookie has already taken to wrapping her little stubby self around him so they can nap together. Evenings have been snuggle time with foster mom and his frenchie sisters. Boo has quite a fan club. I will continue to update you on his progress and will send pics. Boo has been neutered, wormed, had his innoculations and a dental to boot! He is heartworm negative-hooray.
His eyes are not empty anymore-they are full of life and wonder!
I’m glad you all made it back safe and sound. The dogs look happier already! It was great to meet you and the others from Southside Animal Shelter. Thanks for all you do for the animals. Hopefully when Prop B passes we will see less and less of this type of cruelty.

Great work and sorry for the pain you have to witness… But at least you make a difference.
Thank you for taking on this Karma– the good and the sad. Please take care of yourselves. You are a gift to all of us!
God Bless you, your organization, and all the doggies out there! The dogs you rescued look so happy they were saved! Thank you for helping them!
I just adopted an 8 year old girl dog who came from this mill. She was very afraid when I first met her but she hasn’t stopped wagging her tail since she’s been home. I can’t wait to give her the wonderful, loving life that she deserves. I encourage others to do the same!! Keep up the amazing work, because of you I was able to save this girls life and give her a great home.
