Greenies® Brand: Wag & Walk 4 Life™ Program – Take the Pledge and Win *ENDED*

Today is Memorial Day and there is no better way to honor this day than to pledge and participate in Greenies® Brand Wag & Walk 4 Life™ Program. In doing so, you will be helping a disabled veteran get a canine helper through Freedom Service Dogs (FSD), a Denver-based non-profit organization that helps provide canine helpers to military veterans and others with physical or psychological disabilities.

In November of last year, Greenies Brand teamed up with veterinarian and triathlete Dr. Ernie Ward to launch the Wag & Walk 4 Life™ challenge to dog owners across America.  The challenge was for pet owners to visit www.facebook.com/greenies and pledge to walk a certain distance each week with their pet. Once cumulative pledges reached a virtual walk around Earth—about 25,000 miles— The GREENIES® Brand began monetary and in-kind donations to Englewood, CO-based Freedom Service Dogs to support the training and placement of a service dog with a disabled veteran who needed a mobility partner.

Veterinarian and author Dr. Ernie Ward said, “What could be easier than taking a walk with your dog? It’s good for you and it’s good for your pet. Plus, when you take the Wag and Walk 4 Life™ Pledge, you know that your efforts are helping a disabled veteran who sacrificed for our country.” I couldn’t agree more, Dr. Ward!

Freedom Service Dogs (FSD), founded in Englewood, CO in 1987, is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by rescuing unwanted or abandoned dogs (That made my heart smile!) and custom training them for individual client needs. FSD provides lifetime support to its client/dog partners to encourage increased independence and the loving, therapeutic bond between canine and human. FSD’s Operation Freedom is a program that provides specially trained FSD service dogs and places them with military veterans at no charge. From today through the month of June, the Greenies team will be focusing on revitalizing the Wag & Walk 4 Life program, a program designed to get pet owners and pets active on a regular basis. The benefits of getting out and walking with your pet include 120+ calories burned for each 30 minutes of dog walking, lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol levels in dog owners, stronger bones, leaner muscles and healthier joints for both pet and pet owner.

I signed up today and pledged to walk 168 miles. All you have to do is register here: www.facebook.com/greenies. Click the “Wag & Walk 4 Life” link on the left. From there, you answer a few simple questions about your dog(s) (It will allow you to add more dogs if you have more than one) and you will be entered in no time at all.  It does require you to allow Greenies Brand access to certain information on your Facebook.  Understandably, not everyone is comfortable with this and might not sign up.

Each week through June I will post about our progress, as well as the importance of walking with your dog(s), and more information about Freedom Service Dogs.  I guess you can technically say that I have a disability.  I sometimes use a cane to get around.  So, walking with my dog plays an important role in my fitness, as well as theirs.
